Born in San Francisco, Randy's family later moved to Dallas when his father, Cornell Green, joined the Dallas Cowboys. Despite splitting time between San Francisco and Dallas during his father's 14-year football career, Randy's personal journey led him back to California for education.

After graduating from high school, Randy attended De Anza Junior College and San Jose State, majoring in Communications. In 1988, Randy returned to the Dallas area and entered the oil and gas business, marking the beginning of his enduring career in the industry. Married to Kelly Green, a college professor, Randy is a father to two daughters—Tori, a nurse, and Tabitha, who has special needs.
